Lawn Scarification
Out with the old, in with the green
Scarifying sounds dramatic, but all it really means is removing the build-up of thatch and moss that sits on the surface of your lawn and chokes out healthy grass growth.
If your lawn feels spongy, gets mossy, or looks tired even after feeding, scarification might be exactly what it needs.
What is thatch?
Thatch is the layer of dead grass, moss, and organic material that builds up just above the soil surface. A little is normal, but too much stops water and nutrients from getting to the roots and can lead to more moss and shallow grass growth.
Scarifying clears it out so your lawn can breathe and grow properly again.

What does scarifying do?
Removes dead material and moss
Encourages fresh grass growth
Improves drainage and reduces the risk of lawn disease
Prepares the surface for feeding and overseeding
Leaves the lawn looking a bit rough, but much better within weeks
It’s a bit like pruning for your lawn; sometimes it needs to look worse before it gets better.
When should scarifying be done?
Spring (March–April) – Ideal for lawns that need a light refresh and quick recovery
Autumn (September–October) – Best for deeper scarification and long-term recovery
Should always be followed up with feeding, and often overseeding

What can I expect?
After scarification, your lawn may look a bit bare or rough for a few weeks, but don’t worry. With the right follow-up care, it will bounce back healthier, thicker, and greener.
Many of my clients are amazed by the difference it makes, especially when we combine it with a proper seasonal feed and a touch of seed.
Do all lawns need it?
Not always. But if your lawn is:
Full of moss
Slow to green up in spring
Spongy underfoot
Patchy despite regular mowing
…then scarifying could make all the difference.

Want a second opinion?
I’m always happy to come and take a look. If your lawn would benefit from scarification, I’ll advise the best timing and what else it might need to recover fully.
