Overseeding & Lawn Repairs

Bringing your lawn back to life, one patch at a time

Whether it’s patchy after a tough summer, thinned out from moss, or worn down by children and pets, most lawns benefit from a bit of help to thicken up and regrow. Overseeding and targeted repairs are simple but powerful ways to get your grass back in shape.

I regularly do it for clients in Cheltenham and nearby villages, and with the right timing and seed mix, the results can be brilliant.

What is overseeding?

Overseeding is the process of spreading new grass seed over an existing lawn to:

  • Thicken up sparse areas

  • Improve colour and texture

  • Introduce stronger, more resilient grass types

  • Help crowd out weeds and moss

It’s often done after scarification or aeration, when the soil is open and ready to receive new growth.

When should overseeding be done?

  • Spring (April–May) – Once the soil warms up and regular watering is possible

  • Autumn (September–October) – After scarifying or moss treatment, when there’s still warmth and moisture

  • Avoid hot, dry spells or frosty periods

What seed do you use?

I typically use A1 Lawn Platinum, which contains perennial ryegrass for quick establishment and durability, which is ideal for family lawns.

For shadier or less-used lawns, I may use a finer mix with less ryegrass, depending on the conditions.

We can discuss the best option for your garden based on wear, soil type, and sun/shade.

What about patch repair?

Dog wee patches, football wear, or mower slips, whatever the cause, patchy lawns are something I deal with all the time.

I’ll assess the cause (sometimes compaction, sometimes burns), treat where needed, and apply a suitable repair mix with fresh seed and topdressing.

Tips for success:

  • Watering is key – keep the seed moist for 2–3 weeks

  • Avoid mowing too early – first cut once the new grass is 5–7cm tall

  • Combine with feeding – supports root growth and recovery

When done properly, you’ll start seeing fresh green shoots within a few weeks and a noticeably thicker lawn within a month or two.

Not sure if your lawn needs it?

If your grass feels thin, patchy, or just looks tired even after mowing, overseeding could be the boost it needs.

Message me today to book in a lawn review. I’ll let you know if overseeding or spot repair is the right next step.
