How and When to Water Your Lawn

Watering is one of those tasks that many homeowners skip, either because they are unsure of how much to use or because they think rain alone is enough. But during hot spells, watering properly can make all the difference to your lawn’s health.

Lawn Watering

Does your lawn really need watering?

Most lawns in the UK survive without extra watering, going a bit brown in summer before greening up again when the rain returns. However, if you want a lush, green lawn throughout summer, especially if you’ve invested in feeding or treatments, watering is essential during dry periods.

How much water does your lawn need?

Aim to give your lawn at least 20 litres per square metre each week during hot, dry spells. This soaks the soil down to the roots, encouraging deeper, stronger growth. A light sprinkling only wets the surface and can weaken your grass over time.

.

For an average 100m² lawn, that’s around 2,000 litres (2 cubic metres) per week.

How much will it cost to water my lawn?

  • Metered water cost: Approximately £3.20 per cubic metre (including sewerage charges).

  • Weekly cost for 100m² lawn: Around £6.40 per week if using mains water.

Note: Water rates vary by supplier. If you have a water butt or borehole, your cost will be lower.

Best time of day to water

Water early morning or late evening to reduce evaporation loss. Avoid watering in the midday sun as most will evaporate before reaching the roots.

Tips for watering efficiently

  • Use a sprinkler with even coverage.

  • Place a container on the lawn to measure how much water is being applied.

  • Water deeply but less frequently to encourage strong roots.

  • If your lawn is very dry, water in stages to allow moisture to soak down gradually.

Will watering encourage weeds or moss?

Not if you care for your lawn properly. A strong, well-fed lawn will outcompete weeds and moss. Underwatering, on the other hand, can weaken grass, leaving gaps for weeds to establish.
