How to Revive a Hard, Dry Lawn

After long periods of hot, dry weather, many lawns become hard, compacted, and brown. Although it may look worrying, with the right care, you can revive your lawn.

Hard Lawn

Why does my lawn become hard and dry?

Dry weather causes the soil to lose moisture and become compacted. This prevents water, air, and nutrients from reaching the grass roots, leading to poor growth and brown patches.

Steps to revive a hard, dry lawn

1. Water thoroughly

The first step is to rehydrate the soil. Light watering won’t penetrate compacted ground. Aim for 20 litres per square metre, ideally in the evening to minimise evaporation. For detailed guidance, visit How and When to Water Your Lawn.

2. Aerate the lawn

Once the soil has softened with watering or rain, aerate using a garden fork or hollow-tine aerator. This relieves compaction, allowing water and nutrients to reach the roots again. Learn more about my Lawn Aeration services.

3. Feed appropriately

Applying a seasonal fertiliser after aeration gives your lawn a nutrient boost to aid recovery. Visit Lawn Treatments & Feeding for recommended products and timings.

4. Overseed bare patches

If areas remain thin or bald, overseeding will help restore a thick, healthy lawn. Autumn is ideal for overseeding. See Overseeding & Lawn Repairs for full advice.

How long will recovery take?

With regular watering, aeration, and feeding, most lawns will begin to recover within a couple of weeks. Full recovery may take several months, especially if overseeding is necessary.
