Regular garden maintenance carried out by Marcus Bergin in Cheltenham.

Once you've decided to employ a gardener, the next question is usually how often you'd like them to visit.

For most people, the choice comes down to weekly or fortnightly maintenance. Both work well, but the right option depends on your garden, how quickly it grows and how you use it.

After looking after gardens across Cheltenham and the surrounding villages for more than 25 years, I've found there isn't a single answer. The best schedule is the one that keeps your garden healthy, tidy and enjoyable without paying for visits you don't need.

Weekly Maintenance

Weekly visits are ideal for gardens that need to look their best throughout the growing season.

This is often the case for larger gardens with extensive borders, ornamental planting or fast-growing hedges. It also suits clients who enjoy entertaining outdoors or simply like their garden looking immaculate every time they step outside.

Because I'm visiting regularly, small jobs are dealt with before they become noticeable. A little weeding here, some deadheading there, trimming a shrub before it starts to dominate a border. The garden stays consistently tidy rather than going through cycles of looking good and then becoming overgrown.

Fortnightly Maintenance

Fortnightly visits are by far the most popular option for many of my customers.

For a typical family garden, two weeks is usually enough to stay on top of mowing, edging, weeding and general tidying, while keeping costs sensible.

The garden still receives regular attention, but there's enough time between visits for new growth to make the work worthwhile.

Many of the gardens I maintain in Bishops Cleeve, Cheltenham and the Cotswolds follow this schedule because it provides an excellent balance between appearance and value.

When Weekly Makes Sense

Weekly maintenance is often worth considering if:

  • Your garden is large.

  • You have extensive herbaceous borders.

  • You have formal lawns and crisp edging.

  • You have numerous hedges and shrubs.

  • You like your garden looking its absolute best at all times.

  • You simply don't have time to garden yourself.

When Fortnightly Is Ideal

Fortnightly maintenance is usually suitable if:

  • Your garden is medium sized.

  • You do a little gardening yourself between visits.

  • You want regular care without weekly appointments.

  • You have straightforward lawns and borders.

  • Your planting isn't especially demanding.

For many gardens, fortnightly visits provide everything that's needed to keep them attractive throughout the year.

The Season Changes Everything

The frequency of visits isn't always fixed forever.

During late spring and early summer, growth is often at its fastest. Lawns grow rapidly, borders fill out and hedges put on significant new growth.

As autumn and winter arrive, priorities change. Grass slows, pruning begins and attention turns towards clearing leaves and preparing the garden for the following season.

Good garden maintenance adapts to the time of year rather than following exactly the same routine every visit.

It's Not About the Clock

One thing I always explain to new clients is that good maintenance isn't about filling a set amount of time.

Some visits naturally focus on mowing and edging. Others might be spent pruning shrubs, improving borders or tackling seasonal jobs.

The important thing is that the right work is carried out at the right time, allowing the garden to develop naturally throughout the year.

Marcus's Advice

If someone asks me which I recommend without seeing their garden, my answer is usually fortnightly maintenance.

For most gardens around Cheltenham, it offers the best balance between keeping everything looking tidy and managing costs. If a garden is particularly large or you're aiming for a very high standard of presentation throughout the growing season, then weekly visits are often worthwhile.

The best approach is to look at your garden as it is today and decide how you want it to look six months from now.

Looking for a Regular Gardener?

If you're looking for a reliable gardener in Cheltenham, Bishops Cleeve or the surrounding villages, I'd be happy to visit, assess your garden and recommend a maintenance schedule that suits both your garden and your budget. Whether that's weekly or fortnightly, the aim is always the same: a healthy, well-maintained garden you can enjoy throughout the year.
