What Does Garden Maintenance Include?

If you've never employed a gardener before, one of the first questions you'll probably ask is, "What does garden maintenance actually include?"

It's a sensible question because no two gardens are the same. A small courtyard garden needs very different care to a large family garden with lawns, hedges and mature borders.

Some gardens simply need regular tidying, while others benefit from more detailed seasonal work throughout the year.

My approach is straightforward. Garden maintenance is about keeping your garden healthy, tidy and enjoyable throughout the seasons. Rather than waiting until everything becomes overgrown, regular visits allow small jobs to be completed before they become bigger, more expensive problems.

Every Garden Is Different

One of the things I've learnt over more than 25 years of gardening is that there isn't a one size fits all approach.

Some of the gardens I look after around Cheltenham and Bishops Cleeve need attention every week during the growing season. Others are perfectly happy with a visit every fortnight. Some clients simply want their gardens kept neat, while others enjoy gardening themselves and ask me to take care of the more demanding jobs.

That's why every maintenance programme is tailored to the garden rather than following a fixed checklist.

Lawn Care

A healthy lawn often forms the centrepiece of a garden, so it deserves regular attention.

Depending on the season, maintenance may include mowing, edging, monitoring the lawn's health and advising when treatments such as feeding, scarifying, aeration or overseeding would be beneficial.

I believe crisp lawn edges make just as much difference as mowing itself. A neatly edged lawn instantly gives the whole garden a cared for appearance.

Borders and Beds

Borders are constantly changing throughout the year.

Regular maintenance may include:

  • Removing weeds before they become established.

  • Deadheading flowering plants.

  • Cutting back herbaceous perennials.

  • Light pruning where appropriate.

  • Tidying shrubs.

  • Monitoring plant health.

  • Mulching when required.

The aim isn't simply to make the borders look tidy today. It's to help plants remain healthy and attractive throughout the year.

Shrubs and Small Trees

Shrubs benefit from thoughtful pruning rather than constant cutting.

Some shrubs flower on old wood, others on new growth, so timing is important. Pruning at the wrong time can remove next year's flowers.

As part of regular maintenance, I'll prune shrubs at the appropriate time of year to encourage healthy growth while maintaining their natural shape.

Hedge Maintenance

Many gardens include hedges that need trimming once or twice each year.

Regular maintenance helps prevent hedges becoming too large, making them easier and less expensive to manage in the future.

I always check carefully for nesting birds before carrying out hedge work and work within current wildlife legislation.

Seasonal Tasks

Gardens change dramatically throughout the year.

Spring is often focused on preparing for new growth.

Summer is about keeping everything looking its best.

Autumn brings leaf clearance and preparing plants for winter.

Winter is an excellent time for structural pruning, border improvements and planning ahead for the following growing season.

Regular maintenance means your garden receives the right attention at the right time.

Looking Beyond Today's Visit

One of the biggest benefits of employing the same gardener throughout the year is that someone gets to know your garden.

Small changes become noticeable.

A shrub that isn't performing well.

A lawn beginning to suffer.

A pest or disease appearing.

A border becoming overcrowded.

Spotting these things early often prevents much bigger problems later.

Gardens Across Cheltenham

Many of the gardens I maintain across Cheltenham, Bishops Cleeve and the surrounding Gloucestershire villages share similar challenges.

Heavy clay soils can become waterlogged during winter before baking hard in summer. Mature trees often create areas of dry shade where many plants struggle. Every season brings its own opportunities and challenges, which is why regular maintenance is so valuable.

Working in the same local area means I understand these conditions and can adapt my approach accordingly.

Is Regular Garden Maintenance Worth It?

For most homeowners, the answer is yes.

Regular maintenance keeps gardens looking attractive, protects the health of plants and prevents small jobs from becoming overwhelming.

Perhaps most importantly, it allows you to enjoy your garden rather than feeling you're constantly trying to catch up with it.

Whether you need weekly, fortnightly or seasonal maintenance, the right programme should give you confidence that your garden is being cared for properly throughout the year.
