Lush landscaped garden with stone path, terraced wall, ceramic pots, and colorful flowers under dense green trees.

One of the first questions people ask when they contact me is, "How much does garden maintenance cost?" It's a sensible question, but the honest answer is that no two gardens are the same. A small, modern garden with a lawn and a handful of shrubs requires a very different level of care from a mature garden with established borders, large hedges and ornamental planting.

For that reason, I don't offer a one-size-fits-all price. Instead, I visit every garden before providing a quotation. That allows me to understand exactly what's required and recommend a maintenance programme that's appropriate for both the garden and your budget.

What Influences the Cost?

Several factors affect the cost of regular garden maintenance. The size of the garden is an obvious consideration, but it's far from the only one. The condition of the garden, the amount of planting, the number of hedges, whether the lawn requires specialist care and how often you'd like visits all contribute to the time needed to maintain it properly.

An established garden that's been looked after regularly can often be maintained very efficiently. By contrast, a neglected garden may first require a one-off clearance before moving onto a regular maintenance programme. Understanding the starting point is one of the reasons I always prefer to assess the garden in person.

My Garden Maintenance Rates

I believe in being open about my pricing because it helps you decide whether my services are the right fit before getting in touch.

My current rate for regular garden maintenance is:

  • £35 per hour (including VAT)

  • Minimum booking: 2 hours

That means the minimum charge for a maintenance visit is £70 including VAT.

Every garden is different, so the number of hours required will depend on the size of the garden, the amount of planting, the condition of the garden and the type of work involved. During my initial visit, I'll discuss your requirements and recommend a maintenance schedule that suits both your garden and your budget.

Why I Quote After Seeing Your Garden

Although my hourly rate is fixed, I always like to see the garden before confirming how long each visit is likely to take. A small courtyard garden may only need the minimum visit, while a mature garden with extensive borders and hedges will naturally require more time. Visiting the garden allows me to give realistic advice rather than making assumptions from a description or a few photographs.

Weekly or Fortnightly Visits?

The frequency of visits also influences the overall cost. Many of the gardens I maintain across Cheltenham, Bishops Cleeve and the surrounding villages are visited every fortnight. This provides enough regular care to keep lawns, borders and shrubs looking tidy without allowing work to build up.

Some larger or more formal gardens benefit from weekly visits, particularly during the growing season. Others require only occasional seasonal work. During an initial visit, I'll recommend the schedule I believe offers the best balance between maintaining the garden to a high standard and making the most of your budget.

What Is Included?

Regular garden maintenance is far more than mowing the lawn. Depending on the season, visits may include lawn care, edging, weeding, deadheading, pruning shrubs, maintaining borders, trimming hedges, leaf clearance and general seasonal tasks. The work changes throughout the year because gardens themselves are constantly changing.

Rather than following a fixed checklist every visit, I focus on what the garden actually needs. That approach keeps the garden healthy, attractive and manageable all year round.

Why I Don't Quote Without Seeing the Garden

Occasionally I'm asked whether I can provide a price over the telephone or from a few photographs. While images can be useful, they rarely tell the whole story. Access, levels, mature planting, soil conditions and the overall condition of the garden all influence the work involved.

Visiting the garden also gives us an opportunity to discuss your priorities. Some customers simply want the garden kept tidy, while others are looking to improve borders, develop planting schemes or introduce more wildlife-friendly features. Those conversations help ensure the quotation reflects what you actually want rather than making assumptions.

Is Professional Garden Maintenance Good Value?

Many customers tell me they initially focused on the hourly cost of employing a gardener. After a few months, however, they realised the real value was the time they had gained and the consistent condition of their garden. Instead of spending weekends trying to catch up, they were free to enjoy the garden knowing it was being cared for properly throughout the seasons.

Regular maintenance also helps prevent larger problems developing. Shrubs remain manageable, lawns stay healthier and borders never become overwhelming. In the long term, that preventative approach is often more economical than repeatedly paying for major garden clearances.

From Marcus

I've never believed that choosing a gardener should be based on price alone. You're trusting someone to care for an important part of your home, often over many years. My aim is always to provide honest advice, realistic quotations and a maintenance programme that's tailored to your garden rather than trying to fit every customer into the same package. Every garden deserves an individual approach, and that's exactly what I try to provide.

Request a Personal Quotation
