Knowing when to feed your lawn is just as important as knowing what fertiliser to use. Grass doesn't require the same nutrients throughout the year because its priorities change with the seasons. During spring it focuses on producing fresh growth, while autumn is about strengthening the roots before winter arrives. Feeding at the right time supports these natural cycles and helps create a lawn that's healthier, greener and better able to cope with changing weather conditions.

Many lawns receive far more fertiliser than they actually need, often because products are applied at the wrong time of year. A thoughtful seasonal programme usually produces much better results than simply feeding whenever the lawn begins to look tired.

Feeding in Spring

Spring is when the lawn begins growing actively after winter.

As soil temperatures rise, grass starts producing fresh leaves and quickly uses the nutrients stored within the soil. A spring feed helps replace these nutrients, encouraging healthy green growth and allowing the lawn to recover from the colder months.

Before applying fertiliser, it's worth making sure the lawn has started growing properly. Feeding dormant grass rarely provides any real benefit.

Feeding During Summer

Summer feeding is often misunderstood.

During periods of steady growth, a carefully balanced fertiliser can help the lawn remain healthy and maintain its colour. However, during prolonged hot or dry weather, grass naturally slows its growth or even becomes dormant.

Applying fertiliser during severe drought is rarely beneficial unless the lawn can also receive adequate water. In these conditions it's usually better to focus on reducing stress rather than encouraging additional growth.

Feeding in Autumn

Autumn is one of the most important times to feed a lawn.

Rather than encouraging lots of fresh leaf growth, autumn fertilisers are designed to support root development and improve the lawn's resilience before winter arrives.

A stronger root system helps the grass cope better with cold weather, excessive rainfall and the challenges of the following spring.

Should You Feed During Winter?

In most cases, no.

Grass grows very slowly during winter, meaning it has little need for additional nutrients. Applying fertiliser at this time is usually unnecessary and may even be wasteful if the nutrients are washed away by heavy rain before the lawn can use them.

Winter is generally a time to protect the lawn rather than encourage active growth.

Weather Makes a Difference

The calendar is only a guide.

A mild spring may bring grass into growth earlier than expected, while a cold season can delay feeding by several weeks. Likewise, an unusually warm autumn may extend the growing season.

Rather than following fixed dates, it's better to observe the lawn itself. Healthy, actively growing grass is usually ready to benefit from feeding, while dormant grass is not.

Feeding Is Part of a Complete Lawn Care Programme

Fertiliser works best when combined with good lawn management.

Regular mowing, occasional aeration, scarification where necessary and sensible watering all contribute to a healthier lawn. Feeding alone cannot solve problems caused by compacted soil, poor drainage or heavy moss, but it plays an important role within a balanced maintenance programme.

Healthy lawns are rarely the result of one treatment. They're created through consistent care throughout the year.
