Can I Do Some of the Gardening Myself?

One of the biggest misconceptions about employing a gardener is that you have to hand the entire garden over to someone else. In reality, many of my customers still enjoy gardening themselves. They simply appreciate having an extra pair of hands for the more demanding, time-consuming or specialist jobs.
Every gardener enjoys different aspects of the garden. Some people love planting and looking after flowers but dislike mowing the lawn. Others are happy maintaining containers but would rather leave hedge cutting or pruning to someone with the right equipment and experience. Garden maintenance doesn't have to be all or nothing.
Gardening Should Remain Enjoyable
Most people don't stop gardening because they've lost interest. More often, life simply becomes busier.
Work commitments, family life, holidays or changing health can all make it harder to keep on top of every job. Before long, the garden begins to feel like another task on an already busy list.
By sharing the workload, you can continue enjoying the parts of gardening you love without feeling overwhelmed by everything else.
You Choose What You'd Like Help With
Every customer is different, which is why I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach.
Some people ask me to carry out regular mowing and edging while they look after the borders themselves. Others enjoy planting seasonal displays but leave pruning, hedge maintenance and lawn treatments to me.
Some simply need a few visits during the busiest months of the year before taking over again themselves.
The maintenance plan is always tailored to your garden and how involved you'd like to be.
A Partnership Rather Than a Replacement
One of the things I enjoy most is working alongside customers who are passionate about their gardens.
Perhaps you've spent years creating your borders and simply need help keeping them tidy. Maybe you enjoy growing vegetables but struggle with maintaining the rest of the garden. Or perhaps you'd like advice as well as practical help.
My role is to support your enjoyment of the garden, not take it away from you.
Professional Help Where It Matters Most
Certain jobs are often better carried out by an experienced gardener.
These may include:
Pruning established shrubs and small trees.
Hedge cutting.
Lawn renovation and treatments.
Seasonal tidy-ups.
Weed control.
Restoring overgrown borders.
Having these jobs completed professionally often frees up time to enjoy the more creative aspects of gardening.
A Flexible Approach
Garden maintenance doesn't have to follow the same pattern throughout the year.
Some customers require fortnightly visits during spring and summer but only occasional help through winter. Others simply ask for assistance before family gatherings or after returning from holiday.
The aim is to provide support when it's genuinely useful rather than following a rigid schedule.
From Marcus
Some of my longest-standing customers are keen gardeners themselves. They don't employ me because they can't garden. They employ me because they want to enjoy gardening without feeling pressured to keep on top of every task. I see my role as helping people spend more time doing the jobs they enjoy and less time worrying about the ones they don't.
Looking for a Helping Hand?
If you enjoy gardening but would like support with some of the more demanding jobs, I'd be delighted to help. I provide flexible garden maintenance across Cheltenham, Bishops Cleeve and the surrounding Gloucestershire villages, tailoring every visit to suit both your garden and the way you like to garden.
