Do I Need a Gardener All Year Round?

Many people assume that gardening is only really necessary during spring and summer when everything is growing rapidly. While these are certainly busy seasons, a healthy and attractive garden benefits from care throughout the entire year. Every season brings different jobs, and carrying them out at the right time helps prevent problems developing later.
Across Cheltenham, Bishops Cleeve and the surrounding Gloucestershire villages, I look after gardens in every month of the year. Although the work changes with the seasons, regular maintenance keeps gardens healthier, reduces larger repair jobs and allows plants to perform at their best.
Spring Is About New Growth
Spring is when gardens begin to wake up after winter. Lawns need regular mowing again, borders require weeding, shrubs begin producing fresh growth and many plants benefit from feeding and mulching.
This is also the time to identify any damage caused during winter so it can be addressed before the main growing season gets underway.
Summer Is the Peak Growing Season
Summer often brings the busiest period of garden maintenance. Lawns require regular mowing, borders need frequent weeding, flowers benefit from deadheading and many shrubs require trimming to maintain their shape.
Regular visits during summer help gardens remain tidy and healthy rather than becoming difficult to manage after a few weeks of rapid growth.
Autumn Is About Preparation
Autumn is one of the most important seasons for long-term garden health.
Leaves need clearing from lawns, many shrubs and hedges are pruned, lawns are prepared for winter and herbaceous plants are gradually cut back as they finish flowering.
It's also an excellent time for planting trees, shrubs and many perennials while the soil remains warm.
Winter Is Far From Quiet
Although growth slows considerably, winter is far from a dormant period for gardeners.
Many trees and shrubs are best pruned during winter, structural work becomes easier once leaves have fallen and borders can be prepared ready for spring. It's also an ideal time to improve soil, maintain paths and review planting plans before the new growing season begins.
The Benefits of Regular Maintenance
Gardens that receive consistent attention throughout the year are generally easier to manage and more enjoyable to use.
Small jobs carried out regularly prevent larger problems developing. Weeds are removed before they spread, shrubs are pruned before they become overgrown and lawns remain healthier through consistent care rather than occasional rescue treatments.
Perhaps most importantly, regular maintenance allows your garden to develop naturally rather than constantly catching up after periods of neglect.
Is Year-Round Maintenance Right for Every Garden?
Not every garden needs the same level of care. A small, low-maintenance garden may only require occasional visits, while a mature garden with extensive planting often benefits from regular attention throughout the year.
During my first visit, I'll assess your garden, discuss how you use it and recommend a maintenance programme that suits your garden, your lifestyle and your budget.
From Marcus
One of the things I enjoy most about gardening is seeing how a garden changes through the seasons. Looking after a garden year-round isn't simply about keeping it tidy; it's about understanding what each season offers and carrying out the right jobs at the right time. By working with nature rather than reacting to it, gardens remain healthier, more balanced and far easier to enjoy.
