How Long Should Garden Maintenance Take?

One of the questions I'm asked most often is, "How long will my garden need?" It's an understandable question, but the answer is rarely as simple as giving a fixed number of hours. Every garden is different, and the amount of time required depends on far more than its size.
A small garden filled with mature shrubs, roses and ornamental borders may take longer to maintain than a much larger lawn with only a few planting beds. Regular maintenance is about keeping on top of the work before it becomes overwhelming, and that's why every garden receives a recommendation tailored to its individual needs.
Every Garden Is Different
No two gardens grow in exactly the same way. The number of borders, hedges, trees, lawns and planted containers all influence how much maintenance is needed throughout the year.
A newly landscaped garden with young planting may only need light maintenance, while an established cottage garden full of herbaceous perennials will naturally require more regular attention.
The aim isn't to spend as many hours as possible in the garden. It's to spend enough time to keep it healthy, tidy and enjoyable throughout the seasons.
The Time of Year Makes a Difference
Garden maintenance isn't the same every month.
Spring and early summer are often the busiest periods, with vigorous growth, regular mowing, edging, weeding and pruning all demanding attention.
During autumn, leaf clearance, hedge trimming and preparing the garden for winter become the priority.
Winter is generally quieter, allowing time for structural pruning, border preparation and planning ahead for the following growing season.
Because gardens change with the seasons, the amount of work needed during each visit naturally changes too.
Regular Visits Save Time
One of the biggest advantages of regular maintenance is that it prevents small jobs becoming large ones.
A border weeded every fortnight remains manageable. Leave it for three months and the same border may require several hours of work before it begins to look tidy again.
The same applies to lawns, hedges and shrubs. Little and often almost always produces better results than occasional intensive visits.
What Happens During a Typical Visit?
Each visit is planned around the garden's immediate needs.
This may include mowing and edging the lawn, weeding borders, pruning shrubs, deadheading flowers, checking plants for pests or diseases, sweeping paths, trimming hedges or carrying out seasonal tasks such as leaf clearance or mulching.
The work changes throughout the year, ensuring the time spent in your garden is always focused on the jobs that will make the greatest difference.
Finding the Right Maintenance Schedule
Many of my customers choose fortnightly visits because they provide a good balance between keeping the garden looking tidy and managing costs.
Some smaller gardens only require monthly visits, while larger or more intensively planted gardens benefit from weekly maintenance during the busiest months of the year.
During my first visit, I'll assess your garden, discuss what you'd like to achieve and recommend a schedule that suits both the garden and your budget.
Investing in Consistent Care
People often assume that longer visits produce better gardens. In reality, consistency is usually more important than individual visit length.
A garden receiving regular professional attention throughout the year will generally remain healthier, tidier and easier to manage than one receiving occasional intensive clearances.
Regular maintenance also allows problems to be identified early, whether that's a developing pest issue, a lawn beginning to thin or a shrub that would benefit from pruning before it becomes overgrown.
From Marcus
Over the years I've found that the happiest customers are rarely those who book the longest visits. They're the ones who have a realistic maintenance schedule that keeps the garden moving forward every month of the year. Gardens are living spaces that never stand still, and regular care allows them to develop naturally rather than constantly catching up after they've become overgrown.
