Should You Leave Leaves on Your Lawn?

As autumn arrives, the colourful fall of leaves is beautiful – until they start piling up on your lawn. Many clients ask if it’s okay to leave them there or if they should be cleared away.

What happens if you leave leaves on your lawn?
While a light scattering of leaves is unlikely to cause harm, thick layers left over winter can:
Block sunlight, slowing grass growth
Trap moisture, encouraging moss and fungal diseases
Smother the grass, leading to yellowing or dead patches by spring
When should you clear leaves?
It’s best to remove leaves regularly through autumn, especially after windy days. Don’t wait until all the leaves have fallen, as damage can start quickly if they sit wet on the lawn for long.
What’s the best way to remove leaves?
Rake gently to avoid damaging grass
Use a leaf blower for larger areas
Collect and compost to create leaf mould for your borders and beds
Can leaves benefit your garden?
Absolutely. Shredded leaves make an excellent mulch for borders, improve soil structure when composted, and provide shelter for wildlife.
