Walking out onto your lawn and finding it crisp and brown can be worrying, but in most cases, it’s just nature’s way of coping with dry weather.

Why does grass turn brown in dry conditions?

During hot, dry spells, grass enters a state of dormancy to protect itself, turning brown as growth temporarily halts. This helps it survive until moisture returns.

Will my lawn recover after drought?

Yes – in almost all cases. As soon as rainfall returns and temperatures cool slightly, the grass will start to green up again within a couple of weeks.

Should I water my lawn during dry spells?

To keep your lawn green all summer, watering is essential. Aim for at least 20 litres per square metre per week during dry periods. For watering tips, visit my How and When to Water Your Lawn page.

When should I repair drought damage?

Once the weather breaks in late summer or early autumn, it’s the perfect time to:

  • Scarify to remove dead grass and thatch

  • Aerate to relieve compaction

  • Overseed with a ryegrass-based mix to thicken up the lawn

  • Feed with an autumn fertiliser like Johnson Autumn Guard Pro to strengthen roots before winter
